Jamie Lee Curtis is officially an Oscar winner. On March 12, the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actor took home the award for best supporting actress at the 2023 Academy Awards. Speaking with Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on “Today” two days later, Curtis took a moment to reflect on her first-time win and celebrate her trans daughter, Ruby Guest, with the award.
“In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having them be a they/them.”
“Here they are,” Curtis said, proudly holding the Oscar statuette up to the camera during the interview. When Guthrie asked if Curtis had “named her” yet, the actor explained that she only plans to use they/them pronouns while referring to the statuette, in honor of her 27-year-old daughter, Ruby, who is transgender.
“In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having them be a they/them,” Curtis told Guthrie and Kotb. “I’m going to just call them them, they/them. And they are doing great; they’re settling in. In my life, I never thought in a million years that I would have this couple days, and I’m very moved by the whole thing.”
In the press room following her win, Curtis — who has been vocal about her support for the transgender community — also shared her stance on removing gendered awards from award shows altogether. “I would like to see a lot more women be nominated so there’s gender parity in all the branches,” Curtis said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Curtis continued, “We’re getting there — we’re not anywhere near there. The inclusivity involves the bigger question, which is how do you include everyone? As the mother of a trans daughter, I understand that. But to degender the category I’m concerned will diminish the opportunities for more women. The most important thing is inclusivity and more women. Basically, just more f*cking women, all the time and all at once.”
During the award show, the cast and crew of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” took home a total of seven awards, including Michelle Yeoh’s historic best actress win and Ke Huy Quan’s best actor in a supporting role win.
