Months later, in May, Justin admitted that he went through an “emotional breakdown” early on in his marriage. “It’s a journey. I remember when I first got married, I hit a little bit of an emotional breakdown because I thought marriage was going to fix all my problems, and it didn’t,” Justin said on Apple Music‘s Ebro Darden. “It just kind of was a reflection of like, man, you’re a bit of a hypocrite, man.”
He added: “You want your wife to do something that you’re not doing and it’s like, it’s hard sometimes to look in the mirror and really have to realise, man, maybe you’re not the person that you necessarily thought that you were. And that’s just a result of trauma and life circumstances.”
In August, Hailey discussed the challenges in her marriage, telling Harper’s Bazaar: “I just think life is changing all the time. Day to day, week to week, year to year. I think a perfect example of that is over the last six months, both of us have gone through very serious health issues. You have to figure out how to deal with this shit as it comes, you know? There’s a reason they say ‘for better or for worse.’ Like, that’s for real!”

In September, the pair celebrated their four-year wedding anniversary. Justin wrote on Instagram: “Happy anniversary to my best friend and wifey @haileybieber … thanks for making me better in every way. Hailey captioned her own photo: “4 years married to you,” the model wrote. “The most beautiful human I’ve ever known… love of my life. Thank God for you.”
Shortly after, Hailey candidly addressed rumours that she “stole” Justin from Selena. Speaking about the topic for the first time, Hailey said on the Call Her Daddy podcast: “A lot of the perpetuation and the hate comes from ‘Oh, you stole him.’ It’s about people knowing the truth. Because there’s a truth.”
Hailey added: “When him and I started hooking up, or anything of that sort, he was not in any relationship. It’s not my character to mess with someone’s relationship, I was raised better than that. I understand how it looks from the outside, but that was a situation where I know for a fact that it was the right thing for [Justin and Selena] to close that door, but of course, there’s a very long history there, and I respect that a lot.”
