Taylor Swift‘s decision to reclaim her musical canon by re-recording her first five albums is clearly paying off, garnering her a handful of MTV Video Music Award nominations for the 10-minute version of her song “All Too Well.”
On Tuesday, MTV revealed this year’s list of nominees, featuring musical artists whose “cultural impact” and work over the past year has “transformed the music industry,” according to a press release from the channel. The short film, directed by the pop star and starring actors Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, received five nominations, including for video of the year, best longform video, and best cinematography. But despite all that recognition, Swift still wasn’t this year’s most nominated musical artist. That honor goes to Kendrick Lamar,Lil Nas X, and Jack Harlow who each received seven nominations a piece, followed closely by Doja Cat and Harry Styles with six. And Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd also got five a piece.
Harlow and Lil Nas X received recognition for their collaboration on the smash hit “Industry Baby,” in particular the song’s prison-themed music video. This will be the first time Lamar has been nominated for the award since 2018—the year after he released his last project, DAMN.—receiving accolades for his new album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. It will also be Madonna’s 69th time being nominated for the award and 26 musicians will be first-time nominees. These newcomers include Baby Keem, Kacey Musgraves, Anitta, Becky G, Dove Cameron, JID, Wet Leg, and more.
This year’s show is scheduled to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on August 28 beginning at 8 p.m. EST. But who will be performing and hosting the event still has yet to be announced. Until then, fans can begin casting their votes on Tuesday for their favorite artists across all twenty-two, gender-neutral categories.
When announcing the plans for this year’s VMAs back in April, Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming & events at Paramount, said in a statement, “We are thrilled to be back in New Jersey for this year’s VMAs live from Prudential Center. Our 2019 show in Newark was undoubtedly one of our biggest and most successful shows yet and we’re excited to bring back the incredible fan energy for one of music’s most anticipated and iconic nights.”
