The 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards flew by! The organization, honoring the best in television and movies, aired the show on Feb. 27. The competition was fierce this year with “House of Gucci” leading in the film category with three nominations, “Being the Ricardos” stars Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem scoring two nominations, and “King Richard” earning two nominations.
Television saw the stiffest competition between costars. “Succession” led with five nominations, winning one for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series. In the outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series category, “Succession” stars Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong competed for the win — much like their characters. However, “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae came out victorious in the category. “Ted Lasso” scored five nominations and won three.
“Mare of Easttown” and “Squid Game” also got a hefty four nominations each. “Squid Game” is the first foreign-language series and the first Korean series to get a spot at the award show.
The night was filled with monumental firsts. In addition to Lee, “Squid Game” star HoYeon won outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series. They are the first Korean actors to win at the SAG Awards. “CODA” star Troy Kotsur had a historic win for the Apple TV+ movie. He is the first deaf actor to be nominated and take home a SAG Award. The “CODA” cast also were honored with outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Will Smith joined the list of first-time SAG Award winners for his role as Richard Williams in “King Richard.”
Finally, Helen Mirren received a special honor with the SAG Life Achievement Award, with 13 nominations and five wins throughout her career.
