Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester is back with Netflix film The Weekend Away

Leighton Meester has finally returned to our screens for a rather drama-filled Netflix film, which looks to be filled with sun, sand and… murder?

The Gossip Girl actress is starring in The Weekend Away, which has been adapted from the novel by Sarah Alderson. It looks like a cross between a whodunnit and a female-helmed Bourne action movie, what more could you want?

Fans are going berserk about Leighton’s comeback: “I’m ready for Leighton’s world domination,” one has posted online, while another wrote, “Watching this 100% for Leighton! Give this girl the comeback, she deserves”.

For some, it’s taken a beat to recognise the actress outside of her iconic Gossip Girl costume and character, Blair Waldorf: “Feels crazy to see Leighton without a headband lol,” one fan posted.

Here’s everything we know so far about The Weekend Away:

What do we know so far about The Weekend Away’s plot?

Leighton Meester plays Beth, who wakes up to a nightmare when her best friend Kate is found drowned in the sea after a night out in Croatia.

As the story unfolds, Beth comes under suspicion of being involved in Kate’s death, causing her to question what really happened on the night she died. They argued during their night out, sure – it looks like Kate was something of a wild child and Beth was more keen to take things easy, having settled down with a partner and children – but did something more sinister happen between them?

Did Beth kill Kate? Can she remember what really happened? Is she being framed? We can’t wait to find out.

Who has been cast in The Weekend Away?

According to IMDB, only a few actors have been cast thus far. Alongside Meester’s Beth, Christina Wolfe – known for roles in the Batwoman TV series and The Royals – will play Kate, while Palestinian actor, director and cinematographer Ziad Bakri will play Zain, who looks to be a taxi driver on that fateful that night who Beth turns to for support. Luke Norris plays Rob, who as far as we can see is Beth’s husband back home.
