In the spirit of rewriting history (and, you know, including more of the herstory side of things), the show will “peel back the curtain on the personal and political lives of three unique, enigmatic women, tracing their journeys to Washington through interweaving storylines with an enlightening intimacy, with season one focusing on Michelle Obama, Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt.”
Trailer
The trailer for The First Lady came out earlier this week – and consider our appetites thoroughly whetted.
It’s clear that, as per the title, the focus is on the three leading ladies: award-winning actors Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson & Michelle Pfeiffer in all their glory, with what look to be emotive performances all round.
Plus, it’s beautifully-shot, with period costumes and stunning shots of the White House set.
There’s killer dialogue from Viola’s Michelle Obama, as she announces, “The First Lady has to be a special kind of woman…” and tells a boardroom of people, shocked: “They want to turn me into a black Martha Stewart?”
The First Lady will premiere in the US on Showtime on 17 April. A UK release date or platform for the show has not been confirmed.
