Nipple creams for breastfeeding are one of the products I’ll desperately need if/when I do have a baby, as my friends with children like to remind me. Buying the obvious items – like maternity clothes and a baby changing bag – is what first springs to mind when you find out you’re pregnant… but the more personal products that are often unspoken about are actually the ones you’ll be most thankful for. Think maternity knickers, nursing bras, nipple shields and one of the best nipple creams and you’ll be on the right track.
The truth is, there’s still a lot of ‘hush hush’ around the sorts of things pregnant women and new mamas go through – especially when it comes to issues like cracked nipples. And to be honest? It’s time that ended.
Breastfeeding is no easy task and it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. In fact, hardly anyone you ask will say they got on well with it. It comes hand in hand with a lot of struggle, patience and pain, so instead of hiding your discomfort and going through it alone, rest assured that there are a million other mums out there that have been exactly where you are. Dry, bleeding areolas and all.
Is nipple cream safe for breastfeeding? Are nipple creams safe for babies?
To be on the safe side of things, it’s always best practice to read the description or packaging before you buy a nipple cream. Nipple creams for breastfeeding will always declare that they are safe for both baby and mum, and whether or not you need to remove it before feeding.
Look for formulas that are free from parabens, petroleum and artificial fragrance as these ingredients may make the product unsafe while breastfeeding. Go for something that’s dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic and pregnancy safe for the best bet.
