The newest trailer for Billions season 6 teases an upcoming battle between Chuck Rhoades and Mike Prince. The drama series first premiered on Showtime in 2016, receiving largely positive reviews from critics and establishing a loyal fanbase over the course of its five completed seasons. The show tells the story of hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod as he gains wealth and power in the world of high finance, but finds himself targeted by U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades, who attempts to prosecute him for his illegal tactics. Fans of Billions have praised the series for its realistic portrayal of the hedge fund industry, as well as its cast that, which has included Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff, Asia Kate Dillon, and Corey Stoll.
Billions season 6 was confirmed in 2020, and viewers last saw Mike Prince (Stoll) emerge as a new villain. Season 5 saw Prince informing Axelrod (Lewis) of his imminent arrest and taking over the financial sector, successfully removing him from the equation altogether. Axelrod flees the country and after Chuck (Paul Giamatti) discovers who leaked the news, his anger shifts towards Prince. Lewis, who played Axelrod through five seasons, will not return to the series in the upcoming episodes after deciding not to renew his contract. Lewis’ departure from Billions indicates that the ending of season 5 will follow the growing conflict between Chuck Rhoades and Mike Prince.
Showtime has just released a new trailer for Billions season 6, which finds Rhoades and Prince preparing to go to war. Rhoades speaks about targeting not just one billionaire, but the billionaire class; anyone with too much wealth and power. Meanwhile, Prince devises a way to pit his new employees against each other, some of whom already appear to distrust him. He also has plans on bringing the Olympics to New York City, but Rhoades wants to prevent that from happening, stressing that people like Prince don’t care about the average citizen at all. With Rhoades evidently at his most frustrated, Billions season 6 will see him attempt to put a stop to people like Axelrod once and for all. However, this new trailer implies that Prince will not make it easy for him, and is ready to put up quite the fight. Long-time loyal fans of the show will undoubtedly be looking forward to seeing how this inevitable conflict plays out, but many have relayed their disappointment in Lewis’ exit. For a sizeable chunk of the Billions audience, Lewis was a core character without whom the show simply doesn’t work.
Of course, it is not unusual for loyal fans to be upset by major casting changes like Lewis’ exit from Billions. However, with many viewers noting how tedious and repetitive Billions season 5 felt, introducing a new dynamic and a new target for Rhoades to go after might prove to be a positive change in direction. Without fan-favorite Lewis involved, Billions season 6 will certainly need to deliver a drama-packed storyline to keep waning viewership numbers from falling any further.
