Selling Sunset returned to our screens earlier this year with a drama-packed fourth season, which saw an awful lot of tension between Christine Quinn and newbie Emma Hernan, but surprisingly little about the romance between Jason Oppenheim and Chrishell Stause.
The pair went public with their relationship in July earlier this year, with Chrishell taking to Instagram to share a carousel of snaps (including a very cosy one of her and Jason embracing on a yacht, as you do) with the caption, “The JLo effect.”
Naturally this revelation made us even more excited for the arrival of the fourth season of Selling Sunset, which officially dropped on Netflix on 24 November 2021. We were hotly anticipating the big office reveal of their relationship – as well as some spicy reactions from the rest of the cast.
Alas, it was not to be, and in an interview with US Weekly, Jason has explained exactly why they chose to keep their relationship private in the fourth season.
He said, “I think when [a relationship is] public, it puts a lot of just added pressures and publicity and opinion,” adding that, “I think it’s nice to kind of start a relationship in the way that normal relationships kind of grow and progress. And that’s just between two people.”
He also mentioned that they told “some close friends,” before clarifying, “if you want to keep something private, you have to generally not tell too many people. It’s hard to keep a secret amongst a lot of people.”
Jason further explained that he followed Chrishell’s lead when it came to keeping things on the DL, saying, “I think that we were both more comfortable with that approach, and I liked that. I followed her lead on things, and I respected her decision making on that […] I think that that’s the right approach for anyone.”
He added that the people they did tell were “super supportive,” explaining that, “I mean, as we knew they would be. We share such close mutual friends, which is also great in many ways as well. Cause when we’re hanging out with our friends, we’re both hanging out with our friends.
While we absolutely understand Jason and Chrishell’s rationale for keeping their relationship private, we can’t help but hope we get to see more of it in season five of the show. And it looks like we’re in luck.
The first look opens with one of the realtor’s asking “Did you hear the news?,” before Emma responds with, “It’s insane to me.” Uh oh, this is looking good already. It also shows Chrishell chatting to Mary Fitzgerald (Jason’s ex), who says, “I don’t know what to say.” Eeek.
The trailer then cuts to Chrishell, who tells Jason, “We’re not criminals, we’re not doing anything wrong.” Looks like we’re in for some relationship drama after all. You can watch the teaser here:
In even better news, it looks like season five of Selling Sunset isn’t too far away. On one of Chrishell’s Instagram posts celebrating the release of the fourth season, a fan commented, “They should just release season 5 already, so you guys can start filming season 6-10 lol,” to which she replied, “Season 5 won’t be too long of a wait! We just wrapped filming!”
We’re already so invested in this.
You can watch all four seasons of Selling Sunset on Netflix.
