Shay Mitchell is pretty extra when it comes to skincare – and she knows that.
“There are quite a few steps, so stick with me,” she says at the top of her new Vogue beauty secrets video, in which she demonstrates her entire 21-step skin-care routine as well as her everyday makeup process, which involves 25 cosmetic products. All in all, the entire regimen is 58 steps, according to People. “If I have time, I really go full out with my skin care,” the Pretty Little Liars actor says. “Why not? It feels good.”
Obviously, we’re not going to take you through the entire thing – you can watch the video for that –but let’s break down the highlights. How can one possibly use that many products on their skin? Well, it’s as simple as doubling or even tripling up on your favourite steps.
“You’re gonna see quite a few masks,” Mitchell accurately warns. This woman uses a mask for everything; for her face, she uses undereye masks, lip masks, a forehead mask, a full face mask, and a neck mask that she got in Japan. And if you think this is a one-at-a-time process, you’re mistaken. The sheet masks go over the forehead and undereye masks before Mitchell adds the neck strap. On top of all that goes a full face mask from Jessica Alba‘s The Honest Company.
While those are doing their thing, Shay also uses a 24-karat gold breast mask. “Your boobs need love too,” she says. “Especially if you’re going to an event and have a low-cut dress.”
If you think that’s a lot of masks, don’t ask about her face massage routine. Aside from the ice roller that Mitchell uses at the top of her skincare regimen and the ribbed face roller she uses to smooth out her masks, she also uses her hands, a gua sha, and a face massage wand to sculpt and depuff her face. “I’m a big believer in lymphatic drainage,” the You star declares.
Mitchell’s true skin “secret” lies in one product (aside from sunscreen): Basic Brand’s Vitamin E Ointment, which contains vitamin E, wheat germ oil, and aloe vera. Another great tip Mitchell imparts is that she doesn’t cover up her breakouts with makeup. “I don’t even try and cover it,” she says. “I don’t care what the world sees. I need my skin to heal for itself.”
The actor adds, “Makeup for me has always been really fun. I’ve never taken it too seriously.”
