Exclusive Interview with Paul Avgerinos

How would you classify your overall style of music on your “Devotion” CD?

Upbeat Devotional World Dance Pop. A mouthful, I know. But I’ve actually created a new genre here which doesn’t fit into the current pigeon holes. I’m waiting for the music industry to catch up with me! 🙂

Who would you say influenced your music career?

My music has always been a huge part of my spiritual life and practice, so the great saints and sages have had a profound effect on my musical career. Lord Jesus, Sri Krishna, Sri Rama, The Buddha, and all the mahatmas, saints and angels have inspired and guided me all along the way.

What would you like listeners to take away from your music?

Most people love upbeat fun music for work, driving, exercise, parties, etc. So why not uplift your spirit and mind at the same time with the classic mantras that are woven into my Devotion album? A lot of pop music actually has negative messages and energy on the conscious and sub-conscious levels so it truly does matter what you listen to. You become what you eat and also what you listen to all the time

Tell us something interesting about you….

I didn’t get serious about music till I was around 16, which makes me a true late-bloomer. Fortunately, I was blessed to make up for lost time!

What is the best concert you have ever been to that has truly inspired your love of the entertainment business?

In 1974, when I was 16, I saw John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My friend said that I just ran straight up to the edge of the stage, fell down on my knees, and stayed there for the entire show. That was it. Game over: do music full time or die. I was totally ready for either outcome.

What do you enjoy most about the songwriting creation process?

When you start a new track, for the 1st few hours it’s just some simple parts and raw ideas that don’t amount to much at all. Somewhere around hours three and four, a magical synergy takes place as the track takes on a life of its own, a soul if you will. It comes alive and starts telling me how to help it grow, flourish and flower into its true beauty and spiritual power. After all these years, this magical transformation still thrills me every time!

Is there a track on your latest CD that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

I’m very fond of ‘Hare Krishna’ as I was able to channel my inner David Bowie and deliver one of my best lead vocals so far. There’s also a raw deep sensual power around this track that I love working out to!

How have you evolved as a composer over the last year during these challenging times?

Like a lot of us, I doubled down on my strengths and I feel I have delivered some of my best work due to the fires of isolation and difficulty.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

John McLaughlin. I’d love to thank him in person for helping to set my entire wonderful career in motion so many years ago!

What are your future plans for your music Paul?

I’ll keep releasing one to two albums a year as long as the Good Lord lets me, doing my best to uplift, inspire and comfort as many people as I possibly can!
