In the last year, the releasing of gripping thrillers on TV has truly kept us hooked and on the edge of our seats. From Little Fires Everywhere last summer, to The Undoing taking over the national conversation online at the height of lockdown in November, psychological thrillers have definitely helped the time pass.
And so to satisfy the addiction to mystery further, the series Cruel Summer, which launched in the US in April, is finally going to be available for online streaming in the UK, and internationally.
On Friday 6th August, the 10 part series will become available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, no longer only available on the US platform Freeform. It’s success and addictiveness is self-evident, as the show has already been signed on for a second series.
Here’s everything you need to know about the next best binge-worthy series to fly through this summer…
What’s Cruel Summer about?
The show centres on two teenage girls in the fictional town of Skylin, Texas, and how their lives become intertwined. When popular girl Kate Wallis goes missing one summer, Jeanette Turner, who is considered more of an outcast, seemingly adopts Wallis’ life, including her fashion, her personality, and her boyfriend.
After Wallis is found alive the next summer, Turner becomes hated among the whole nation, accused of playing a part in Wallis’ abduction.
From this ensues the entire nation picking which side to be on and who to believe in this small town mystery. It follows twists and turns like any thriller would, but the way in which the show jumps between the summer of 1993, 1994 and 1995 increases the confusion and mystery further.
Who’s in Cruel Summer?
Following her success as the main character and executive producer of The Sinner, Jessica Biel also joined the executive production team of Cruel Summer. The similarity in genre between the two shows, and the cult following of the aforementioned, suggests a promising tensity from Cruel Summer.
Also, the series was written by Bert V. Royal, who also famously wrote the 2010 teen film Easy A, starring Emma Stone. Though the great difference in genre between Easy A and Cruel Summer is certain, the centring on American teenage life is always enticing to a UK audience.
As for the cast, the lesser known young actors, including Olivia Holt and Chiara Aurelia as the main characters, promise new and exciting faces on TV.
Is there a trailer?
Yes, there is, and it promises all the winding roads and jumping plot lines that you look for in a thriller.
