Vice President Kamala Harris is making history once again! On Saturday, Kamala attended a Pride celebration in Washington DC with husband Doug Emhoff, making her the first sitting vice president to march at a Pride event. As America’s second couple joined marchers during the Capital Pride Parade, Kamala sported a “Love Is Love” T-shirt complete with a bright pink blazer, while Doug wore a T-shirt with the words “Love first” written across it. “Happy Pride,” Kamala reportedly shouted out to the crowd.
“We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected.”
While there, Kamala delivered a brief speech, advocating for the passing of the Equality Act, which protects LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in the workplace, schools, and other key areas of life. “We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We need, still, protections around employment and housing,” Kamala said, according to NBC Washington. “There is so much more work to do, and I know we are committed.”
Kamala previously kicked off Pride Month with a poignant post about its significance on Instagram. “Every June, we celebrate the contributions the LGBTQ+ community have made to our nation’s past, present, and future — but we must recommit ourselves to doing everything in our power to protect the community from discrimination and harm and deliver full and equal rights to LGBTQ+ Americans,” she wrote on June 4.
