The ‘one-minute mullet’ is going wild on TikTok and let’s just say it’s the bravest hair trend going

Hairstyle trends are going retro for SS21 – we’ve seen the mullet and the shag return, both styles being a nod towards a grungy, rock’n’roll, messy-around-the-edges vibe. Really, it makes sense we’re embracing this lived-in look, after a year of DIY cuts and grown out lengths.

Over on Pintrest, searches for ‘mullet hairstyles’ have increased by 55%, along with other increases around ‘shag’ terms too.

Clearly we’re looking for inspiration, and TikTok is providing one short-cut route to achieving the, well, short cut. But let’s just say it’s not for the fainthearted.

Brave TikTokers are trying out the ‘one-minute mullet’ (a bit like a cheated wolf cut), which involves putting your hair in a pony tail high up on the head, then with a pair of scissors chopping a considerable length of the tail off. (Or getting a brave friend to do it instead). Disclaimer: do not try this at home unless you’re very brave or happen to be a hairdresser.

The ideas is it gives the multi-layered effect that characterises the mullet and shag style. Some people have demoed the cut, visibly anxious as the hair falls to the floor, but then been happy with the result achieved in minimal time.

And to be fair, some of the results are impressive.

But clearly with this one-size-fits-all approach that lacks the presence of a skilled professional, there’s room for it to go wrong.

Some people have offered alternative ways to do the cut on the social platform, which add a couple more steps in the process by cutting sections of hair rather than the whole thing at once (though it’s still an extremely quick DIY job).

The safest way to get a mullet of course is to go to a hairdresser who can personalise the cut to suit your hair thickness, type and face shape.

Even if the one-minute mullet doesn’t seem like the best move for you, at least the trend has brought us some entertaining content.
