Predatory Lesbians and Witchy Spells in Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘The Neon Demon’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Predatory Pussy.

May has been all over the place for Horror Queers. We began with super underrated DTV Mirror Mirror, stirred controversy with The Faculty (they’re all queer people – get over it), and revisited the legacy of Saw in time for Spiral‘s theatrical debut.

Now we’re dipping our toe into modelling with Nicolas Winding Refn‘s The Neon Demon (2016).

In the film, ingenue Jesse (Elle Fanning) arrives in Los Angeles and immediately causes a stir among the modelling community. Not only does she attract the attention of every creepy male, including motel owner Hank (Keanu Reeves) and photographers Dean (Karl Glusman) and Jack (Desmond Harrington), Jesse inspires plenty of jealousy among “older” models Sarah (Abbey Lee) and Gigi (Bella Heathcote).

But the one person Jesse should be most concerned about is actually make-up artist (predatory lesbian?) Ruby (Jena Malone), who has some nefarious – and delicious – plans for the young model.

Episode 127 – The Neon Demon (2016) feat. DeVaughn Taylor

For this week’s episode, we’re headed to Los Angeles to become stars in the fashion industry with Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon (2016). Tagging along for the cannibalism and necrophilia is Bloody Blunts Cinema Club‘s DeVaughn Taylor who has a unique appreciation for spooky nonsense and has a pretty killer theory about what Ruby, Sarah and Gigi are really up to. CW: sexual assault, necrophilia

Up for discussion: connections to American Psycho, Abbey Lee and Jena Malone appreciation, why Trace finds the film so uncomfortable and a sprawling discussion regarding accusations about the film’s misogyny.

Cross out The Neon Demon!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re back in Little Red Riding Hood territory with 90s UK film, The Wolves of Kromer!
