The life of actor Chadwick Boseman will be honored in a new Netflix documentary special, titled Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist, which will air on April 17, 2021. The special is set to be an intimate look at Boseman’s life and career and will explore the acting process that informed his most transformative performances including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Black Panther. Boseman’s costars and friends, including Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, George C. Wolfe, Branford Marsalis, and Phylicia Rashad will also feature in the documentary, exploring the Oscar-nominated actor’s extraordinary commitment to his craft.
On April 14, Netflix released a teaser trailer for the special, which featured a voiceover from the actor himself. “I am an artist. People call me an actor. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself an actor. I would call myself an artist”, he explained. The trailer also features a heartfelt quote from Viola Davis, which said that “you know you have to step up when you’re in his presence. He’s looking at your work, and he’s, like, really hyperfocused, on the craft, on the process. That’s Chad.”
Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist will air on Netflix on April 17, for a limited run of 30 days. Watch the full trailer above.
