While the white t-shirt reigns supreme as the ultimate basic top, now there’s a sniff of spring in the air our limbs are looking for the light. Enter the tank top. Getting your legs out is a Big Commitment. But baring your arms? It’s a baby step towards warm weather wear and we are ready, whether you call it a sleeveless vest, camisole or racer-front tank.
The versatility that a sleeveless tank can bring to your wardrobe will help you build more outfits than you can ever imagine. It’s a super-useful base layer that adds interest to white shirts, blazers, strappy dresses or even other tank tops – if the straps are wide enough – but the perfect tank can also take centre stage in the right *lewk.*
We’ve been researching some of the freshest ways to wear a tank and minimal is the mood of the moment. Some of our favourite Instagram inspirations are paring their looks right back.
@smythsisters does perfect minimalism in a racer-front vest – one of the key cuts for this item this year.
Choosing a monochrome palette is a shortcut to chic. We love @jessicaskye’s black tank teamed with inky-coloured jeans.
@pheebslfashion adds a flash of khaki and layers of gold jewellery to her black tank and we’re planning on adding stacks of arm candy to our tank looks too.
If you want to keep a simple silhouette but add a little colour, Arket’s silk knitted tank in lavender is one of our faves (which would look dreamy with stone-washed jeans.) Topshop’s lemon yellow funnel neck top is similarly poppy and would look super cool with khaki chinos. For something that’s more of an investment, Kenzo’s pastel leopard print top or Chloe’s red and white striped tank upgrade the basic tank to a fashion statement and we’re here for it.
