It’s safe to say our roots have taken a battering over the past year, you know, with our very limited access to hairdressers (and our failed at-home attempts). So, when hair salons do reopen in a few weeks, we’re looking to make a drastic change.
Which is why we’re loving the ‘reverse contrast’ hair trend. As its name suggests, the reverse contrast trend sees your roots dyed a lighter colour while your ends are dyed darker – basically the opposite of our weathered root regrowth.
The most famous face of this trend is, of course, Billie Eilish whos green roots became her signature until she recently debuted a new (completely gorgeous) shaggy blonde look.
Yet, it seems Billie has inspired more people to embrace the reverse contrast look – albeit with more natural colourings.
Influencer, Molly O’Malia’s reverse contrast look has gone viral with its blonde roots and brunette tips. The look was done by hairdresser Linh Phan and shows Molly with white-blonde bangs and roots that softly transition into darker brunette hues (but there is still a clear cut line where the blonde meets the brunette, a hallmark of the reverse contrast).
Whether or not you’re game to take on a reverse contrast style, we’re only three months into 2021 and we’ve already seen a slew of hair trends pop up on our radar.
One of our favourites is the asymmetrical bob, which has quickly become the look we’re going to be taking to our hairdressers post-lockdown (how good would a bob with reverse contrast look?!) It’s a fresh take on Victoria Beckham’s famed asymmetrical bob of the 2000’s – think more jaw length, wavy locks than a sleek and ultra-harsh ‘do.
We’re also seeing the return of the curtain bangs, shaggy, layered textures and the the boyfriend bob. Even the mullet (seen on Miley Cyrus last year) is here to stay. While we’re not sure about the latter, we will be first in line for a hair reset as soon as we can.
