Demi Lovato Opens Up About Her 2018 Drug Overdose: “I Had to Essentially Die to Wake Up”

Demi Lovato continues to be an open book when it comes to discussing her struggles with sobriety. Following the SXSW premiere of her Dancing With the Devil YouTube docuseries, the 28-year-old singer got incredibly candid while discussing her 2018 near-fatal drug overdose with CBS Sunday Morning. “The doctors told me that I had five to 10 minutes. If no one had found me, then I wouldn’t be here,” Demi said in a preview clip of the interview released on Friday. “I’m grateful that I’m sitting here today . . . For the first time in my life, I had to essentially die to wake up.”

In her Dancing With the Devil documentary, Demi revealed that she’s been exploring moderation over sobriety, using marijuana and alcohol in supervised moderation in hopes of finding a balance with her addiction. “You shouldn’t be forced to get sober if you’re not ready,” Demi explained. “You shouldn’t get sober for other people. You have to do it for yourself.” Demi’s full interview with CBS Sunday Morning airs on March 21, while her Dancing With the Devil series premieres on YouTube on March 23.
