As a pregnant woman, I can’t say how excited I am that leggings are now socially acceptable 24/7, for any occasion. When I say any occasion, what I mean of course is working from home, going on a walk or popping into Sainsbury’s, but I think it’s fair to say that even post-lockdown, the cotton Lycra babies we’ve been wearing on the regular will stay a part of our daily wardrobes – whether you’re sporting a bump or not.
If, like me, your belly is expanding on what feels like a daily basis, you’ll know that comfort is key. And although loungewear or a floaty dress can do the trick, there really is nothing better than throwing on a pair of maternity leggings. With a stretchy band that comfortably covers your bump (and can even provide some support) and the ability to suck you in (without feeling like a squeezed sausage) maternity leggings form the base for most pregnant women’s wardrobes for good reason.
Besides the comfort factor, leggings – especially black leggings – go with everything. Right now through lockdown, pair your maternity leggings with a cosy jumper or cardigan; for a chance to show if your bump tuck your knitwear in.
When lockdown lifts and you and bump are ready to be seen out and about, your leggings will transition as easily – dress up with a blazer and a pair of slingbacks, or try pairing with an oversized button up – keep the bottom buttons open, or tie in a knot at the top of your bump for extra bump visibility (as an extra bonus, you’ll probably be able to wear one of your pre-preggo shirts.)
So if you find yourself with a bun in the oven, investing in a couple of pairs of quality maternity leggings is a sartorial no-brainer. Fortunately, there are a plethora of stylish, non see-through leggings to now chose from; from on-trend leggings with ankle split detail to leather look pairs (this Spanx styleis always sold out so get them before they’re gone) and high street styles like these from Mango, maternity leggings have had a glow-up.
