“Does She Know” – by Lecretia Ann, from – Better Thangs, is not the average country song because there is a story to it that will unfold here to describe why and help shed more light on this terrific singer and songwriter from South Carolina with some attitude to go with her down home country girl qualities. She also plays guitar and is backed by world class musicians, which helps it feels more like a rocking band for all it’s worth. And there’s more to talk about than just this one tracks as the story unfolds, “Roll It Up” gets a word in edgewise too.

The words are always important to me, so it will benefit to explain this song’s background because it comes from visiting her grandmother who never missed and episode of The Young And The Restless. The lyrics are sung as if Lecretia lived the love triangle between three of the stars on the show. And anyone who knows the show knows the characters and the situation they got into and the graphic details of it, so it is easy to visualize through song lyrics. The result of it is to me that “Does She Know” is not reality based, but that is also the point.
As the lead off track of the album, it’s well placed in the track order for a single, and it kicks off with some hot guitar before getting right into it with a catchy course and you’d have to know what the song is about to really correlate it to where the words come from, but it’s always good to know where the mind of the artist is at the time of writing their magic. “Does She Know” more-or less keeps in reference to the love triangle without giving away where it actually comes from.
Country music gets more pop laden as the years go by, but this is a lot more mature and also contains a lot of mainstream rock values. If I were to be honest, I hear “Does She Know” making onto radio stations across the nation because it has that aim all over it. The soothing essence of her voice naturally carries the song with the lyrics doing the rest, I am just adding the story here to explain where it came from because the lyrics don’t tell it enough detail. It’s more of a suggestive thing in the title repeated so well in the chorus.

I love this track, but it’s not all there is to rave about, with the Better Thangs album containing a ton of great music, there’s also “Roll It Up” with its much spicier attitude and straight forward rollicking pace. Once I heard a download of this cut along with “Does She Know” it was an easy decision to get into the rest of the tracks and I can still say they are most definitely well-chosen highlights. These songs have energy in different places, so they come out even for me, but I wouldn’t shy away from one of her songs after this experience.
