Heidi Webster Releases “Masterpiece”

Pop singer/songwriter Heidi Webster takes the remnants of what she might perceive as baggage and makes them all work in her new gem “Masterpiece”. Featuring a blended music bed that stirs murky tones with bright ones, Webster’s keen reminder that our imperfections are meant to be, and to listen to the voice that reminds us all to move forward. Ensconcing the listener with her near ethereal vocals, Webster’s relaxing and soothing voice makes “Masterpiece” something to treasure.

Webster builds an immediate trust with the listener. Her voice is warm, gracious. As a listener, I heard a woman who has years of heartache and falsehoods. I couldn’t help but be struck by the humanity and her voice – I found myself rooting for her. Faced with a life where she’s probably stumbled a few steps, or answered the self-doubt, she presses forward. The uncertainties, conveyed in the lower tones in the music bedrock, also have many shards of light and brighter tones.

I will make a masterpiece with the pieces that are left of me, she sings. Drawing from her emotional pool, Webster presents an unguarded, vulnerable position. Fans of Christina Perri will want to take a listen to Webster’s stirring vocals. She’s not as breathy as Perri, but certainly a tinge of sultry runs its course through the vocal center. I would also dare to say that she resembles Adele, but with more of a folk/pop foundation than a bluesy/pop foundation. I like the way Webster throws in the word scaffolding in her song. It invokes the perfect image of someone who’s a work in progress. Or the road to life is always under construction. I think she impresses upon the listener – of any gender – that life is going to throw many wretches at you, and some days you crumble. You might falter two days in a row, but you get back up again that third day and start to re-build and put together the bricks.

Flowing in the undercurrent, the music bed again exudes warmth as well as darkness. I think this is completely on par with life. We have good days, we have bad days. The ebb and flow of it all in the synth-like music bed in “Masterpiece” grips the listener. I wanted to linger in those spaces just a bit longer. Webster’s magnificent vocals allowed me to turn my attention, and keep it. Still, the anchor she presents with the music is undeniable. Isn’t that life – some days you want to stay longer in bed and not face the music. Webster gives the best of her voice, and the charm of the music bed wraps it all so wonderfully together.

“Masterpiece” isn’t the sort of song you put on a pedestal and just admire it. You feel it. You embrace these words and more importantly, Webster invites you to be a visitor, even if it just for a few minutes, to be in her shoes. It’s alive. It’s energy. Webster’s essence in “Masterpiece” is within all of us – her relatable song is universally wonderful.
