“Mundane” is the latest single from Indian singer/songwriter Mali. From her sophomore effort Caution To The Wind, Mali’s drive for perfection is almost accomplished. And maybe it’s not perfection she seeks, but rather to find meaning in her life. “Mundane” for all its memorable bells and equally enamoring whistles, is at its core, a song about discovering self-worth and putting down some goals. “Mundane” to me, is about being present in life, taking it all in. What you do with that time, and that opportunity, well, for an artist like Mali, she brings an inspiring pop song peppered with New Wave tendrils. “Mundane” is a vivid rush of dreaming what can be right around the corner. You just have to wait.

Based in Mumbai, Mali is in the company of many Indian artist making footprints in the global music scene. “Mundane” definitely has western influences, especially the New Wave semblances. Mali finds my weakness – I’m a sucker for the synthesizer and I fall prey to hits wiry, outstretches. She makes the computerized notes sound like beating hearts and pondering thoughts playing a chess game against a computer. I might crush on the synthesizer a bit longer, but I should really move onto the story line.
Lyrically, this song is about walking out the front door, taking on the world and trying to figure out what to do with your day. Or what to do with your life. Mali said she wrote the song in her gap year – the time between university and a full-time employment. I can imagine that this time, a growth spurt for many, has its own challenges. Oh to be young and have the world at your fingertips and time on your side. Time, what does it mean to you….so many opportunities, Mali sings. Her voice is fluttering, like a butterfly taking flight. Mundane, mundane she sings, as if she were writing the words over and over in her diary. I imagine her sitting there, maybe on an apartment deck and watching the world gloss over. For as much as the idea weighs on her mind, she really has a cheery disposition and a fun attitude. Still, there’s a slight sadness or melancholy in her delivery. I’m not sure why I thought that other than sometimes when you’re a dreamer, it always seems like ions or impossible for the dream to come to fruition.
I obviously loved the song structure she created, and the storyline had me hooked. I also really dug how relatable Mali is. She sounds young, and full of life. We need that. We don’t need cute and ordinary. We have enough of that. The more I listened to the song “Mundane” the more Mali reminds me of that quote: for she is small, she is fierce. Mali doesn’t have to put on the princess or the pretend sensuality to convey to her audience that she is a confident woman. She does it through her art and her prime voice. “Mundane” is an excellent song.
