Killer Klowns From Outer Space 2 Depends On Fans Says Original Director

It’s up to the fans to make Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 happen, according to director Stephen Chiodo. Killer Klowns from Outer Space came out in 1988, but unlike many iconic horror films from the decade, Stephen and Charles Chiodo’s sci-fi/horror movie initially didn’t appeal to movie-goers. Over the years however, Killer Klowns from Outer Space has turned into a cult classic. Even with an intriguing plot about aliens resembling circus clowns harvesting humans in cotton candy cocoonsKiller Klowns from Outer Space has never gotten a sequel.

The Chiodo Brothers have been trying to make Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 a reality ever since the ’80s, but they just can’t seem to get the film out of development hell. The brothers have teased progress on the sequel a few times in the past, and at one point, they even considered turning Killer Klowns from Outer Space into a TV show. The best fans got was a Killer Klowns from Outer Space maze at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in 2019, but the long-awaited sequel has yet to come. That being said, Stephen Chiodo hasn’t given up hope.

While speaking with Comicbook, Chiodo discussed what it would take to make Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 happenChiodo says that it is really up to the fans to get the sequel off the ground by writing to MGM. Chiodo’s full comments can be read below:

“Look, MGM controls Killer Klowns. If [fans] write MGM and say, ‘Where’s our sequel? Where’s that property?’ There’s so many ways they can exploit this thing. It’s really the fan base. The fan base has to be more vocal to MGM more than us, because they control it. But I’m just so happy. That was a project that, we just wanted to make a film that we loved. Again, Forbidden PlanetInvasion of the Body Snatchers, all the films that we loved is thrown into that. And I’m really pleased that people responded to it.”

In addition to urging fans to contact MGM, Chiodo also revealed that he’d pitched Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 to Netflix, saying, “There’s interest, and it wanes and flows. You get some executives who really want to do it, then, all of a sudden, musical chairs. They’re out, a new regime is in, and they don’t get it. We’ll see how Alien Xmas does with the Netflix people. We’ll see if they can embrace our sensibility.” For a while, it seemed like all hope of seeing Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 was lost after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. Earlier this year, Edward Chiodo put that rumor to rest, saying that MGM owns the rights to the franchise and that a sequel wasn’t dependent on Disney’s approval, meaning that seeing the sequel on Netflix is possible.

With Killer Klowns from Outer Space now considered a cult classic, it would make more sense for a sequel, reboot, or TV series to end up on a streaming service like Netflix rather than in theaters. As Stephen Chiodo mentioned in his quote above, his stop-motion animation Alien X-Mas is now on Netflix, so if that does well, the streaming service could be more inclined to hear out more pitches on Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2
