Halle Berry Wants to Represent Herself in Her Divorce Case

After being separated from her ex-husband for five years, Halle Berry is taking her divorce case into her own hands.

According to court documents obtained by People, the actor filed a petition with the court on August 12 to represent herself in the final stages of her divorce from ex Olivier Martinez. The documents were signed by both Berry and her former attorney, Marina Zakiyan Beck.

Berry and Martinez share a six-year-old son together, Maceo, of whom they reportedly have joint physical and legal custody. Their divorce was finalized in December 2016, after the couple both agreed to the terms of their child’s care, but according to TMZ, in 2018, Berry filed new paperwork to formally deal with the remaining unresolved issues of their divorce as the case was still technically considered active by the court.

The pair had a whirlwind romance after meeting on the set of the film Dark Tide in South Africa, in 2010. They confirmed their engagement in March 2012, married in Martinez’s native France a year later, and welcomed their son three months after that, in October 2013.

They announced their separation in October 2015 via a joint statement that read, “It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce. We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children’s privacy as we go through this difficult period.”
