Distinctly honest and a bit Anthony Kiedis-esque aloof, Drury’s magnetic vocals in the pop rock/ genre bending song are just a tidbit to the fashionable cool track.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, but raised in San Diego, California, Drury’s latest project is his forthcoming EP Alice, It’s All In Your Head. With nearly 84-thousand monthly Spotify listeners across the globe, Drury has amassed a staggering number of listeners to his alt pop offerings. “Second Chances” is deliciously good.
You changed your mind, you took my time, second guesses are a waste of time, sings Drury. Pregnant pauses interrupt each line, with enough room to take in a few deep breaths. The music bed consists of stirring violins, a beautiful dance. A gong-like percussion booms. His voice is deep, almost nonchalant. As a listener, I was affixed to his every note; his baritone delivery just as mysterious as the song’s direction. He picks up tempo after the first stanza, and starts to vary his voice. He gains momentum and he releases a wider range. Tell me not to run away…I miss you he sings with more gusto. You know we never had a chance, he sings.

The violins in the music bed begin to fuse into a more electric tone. It’s not EDM, but it’s that alt pop aforementioned. The song takes some wild turns and as the mood changes, the listener starts to feel like an emotional sponge. Taking in the juices, gleaning the love pouring out of Drury’s vocal delivery. His voice is made for pop music and he has complete control over this song – his dramatic pauses and changeups are incredible. His natural sensibility and sensuality is like the good girl that loves the bad boy. You can’t get enough of it even though you know it’s wrong for you. As the song progresses, it’s a straight-forward storyline, but the little music bed nuances and Drury’s vocals give the song an edge. He shortens the distance between his words, and plays with that cadence here and there. You feel like a slow dance at times, while during other times, you feel like you’re reliving a past relationship in your own soundtrack. He connects with the listener in an instant, and the song’s lingering messages stay with you for days. The undertow, a hum-along breathes yet another level to this triumphant song.
All in all, “Second Chances” is a first-level alt pop hit. The violin orchestration is gorgeous and reminds me a bit of something you’d hear from One Republic. Given the circumstances of today’s musical landscape, it’s songs like “Second Chances” that fight their way through the fray. It unfolds like a blooming flower. It’s artists like Trevor Drury that become not just a number, but a household name.
