These are our absolute favourite cheap hotels across the UK to staycation on a budget

Even with some European countries opening their borders and the government potentially allowing ‘travel corridors‘ from July, the prospect of a summer holiday somewhere exotic is looking pretty unlikely to most of us. And honestly? The very thought of being at an airport is enough to make us want to bathe in anti-bac right now.

So, we may have shoved our bikinis into that long-neglected ‘holiday’ box at the back of our wardrobes and postponed hopes of splashing about in the Aegean – but we don’t have to ditch our dreams of a post-lockdown holiday.

In fact, since the government has announced the restart of domestic tourism on 4th July, many hotels and B&Bs in the UK will be opening their doors again this summer.

That can only mean one thing: staycation time. And while UK travel is famed for its high-profile country houses and luxurious (read: expensive) landmark hotels, it also has a proud history of producing independent, characterful boltholes with bags of soul at affordable rates.

Robin Hutson’s Pig hotels have become synonymous with affordability and UK travel, with six countryside locations across the south of England which have, in recent years, surged in popularity amongst burnt-out city dwellers longing for a relaxing weekend retreat. But you’ll also find some lesser-known gems here, whether you want cosy inns nestled deep in the countryside, vibrant urban boutiques or even seaside views. We repeat: seaside views. Yep, maybe best to pack that bikini after all.

So, from a 14th century castle just outside of Durham to one of London’s quirkiest – and best value for money – boutique retreats, these are our favourite hotels under £150 (most including breakfast) per night in the UK.
