Miley Cyrus Is Taking a Break from Weed, Alcohol, and Washing Her Hair

Miley Cyrus has given up everything over the past six months, including showering regularly.

On Tuesday’s episode of Variety’s The Big Ticket podcast, the pop star announced she’s been “sober sober for the past six months.”

At first, she says her abstinence began because of the vocal cord surgery she underwent in November that required her not to speak for four weeks afterward. During that time, she said, “I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’ By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.“

She added, however, that being sober is, “really hard because especially being young, there’s that stigma of ‘you’re no fun.’ It’s like, ‘honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.’ The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”

And it’s not just drugs and alcohol Cyrus is putting on pause. In the same interview, she joked, “In the past four months, I think I’ve washed my hair twice. Once for you and once for Sir Elton John.” The singer interviewed John for her Instagram Live series Bright Minded back in April.

Instead of shampooing, Cyrus simply let her mom, Tish Cyrus, chop off all her hair in May—a highly relatable quarantine decision.
