PlayStation 5 DualSense Controller Officially Revealed

Sony officially revealed the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller to the world today, detailing the successor to the DualShock model that has been such a prominent feature of the PlayStation family of consoles since their inception. Sony has been slowly unveiling new technology and hardware design for the PS5 over the past few months, culminating in a presentation on PS5 full specs that is still being debated as either informative, dull, or both.

That said, however, the anticipation surrounding the PlayStation 5 controller design and other major features has been anything but muted. While the PlayStation 5 SSD remains the talk of the industry – with some developers praising it in such hyperbolic fashion its tough to tell just how impactful it will actually be – other elements of the PS5 have been just as intriguing. One talking point has consistently been the PS5 controller, which has been the subject of rumors and speculation for about as long as the console has been discussed. Early PlayStation 5 patents suggested some truly wild technology, but since then Sony has been remarkably quiet about a controller that had been tagged to be potentially revolutionary.

That all changed today, as Sony pulled back the curtain on the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller on the PlayStation official blog. The company is still preserving a lot of what made the DualShock such a fan favourite, with similar button layouts on both sides of the controller as well as the same dual analog stick set up in the center. DualSense has a built in microphone, a sleek new white design, and most importantly a haptic feedback system that will add a variety of sensations for players as they progress through games.

The new PlayStation 5 DualSense controller will also have adaptive triggers in its L2 and R2 buttons. What that means is that when players use something like a bow and arrow in game, they’ll feel tension building within the trigger button drawing the bow is associated with. It will add another layer of immersion and seems to be the focal point in the PS5 controller design – giving players a sense of touch within their gaming experience.

It remains to be seen how the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller will play out in the hands of consumers, but for now, it’s a shocking redesign of an old favorite that’s eschewing the traditional black and bulky design for something significantly more modern. That being said, however, a lot of what’s made the DualShock popular is being preserved in the PS5 controller, too, so it shouldn’t be too drastic a change for fans – and the innovation it brings to the table should be exciting enough for even skeptics to give it a shot.
