2019 might have been the year of major political angst and the climate change crisis, but let’s not forget it also brought us Wagatha Christie, Fleabag’s Hot Priest and Fyre Festival’s Andy King.
As the year draws to a close and we prepare to enter a new decade, we’ve reflected on all the iconic moments that shaped every meme and headline, every dinner party conversation and office chinwag. From the makeups and breakups, to rise and falls (quite literally – Gemma Collins on Dancing on Ice, anyone?) of our favourite celebrities, 2019 has served up the entertainment in spades.
Scroll down for…GLAMOUR’s edit of 2019’s year-defining moments. And yes, that was a deliberate nod to Wagatha Christie, our favourite of them all.
Wagatha Christie
When Coleen Rooney became a modern day Poirot and outed fellow WAG Rebecca Vardy for leaking fake news to the press. The best part? The onslaught of memes that had the nation howling for weeks.
Andy King, Fyre Festival
When Andy King, the producer behind Fyre Festival, unintentionally became a viral meme. The poor guy went viral after revealing how far he was willing to go to make the doomed festival a success.
The Jordyn Woods/ Tristan Thompson saga
When Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian’s best friend Jordyn Woods served the ultimate act of betrayal when she hooked up with Khloe’s husband. Her Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith had the entire office gathered round a computer screen.
Fleabag’s Hot Priest
The final episode of Fleabag aired on the 7th of April and collectively our hearts broke (PLEASE bring it back, Phoebe). Arguably our biggest crush of 2019 was Andrew Scott playing the ‘Hot Priest’ – there’s no one more unavailable than a man of God, and it turned us all absolutely bonkers.
Greta Thunberg’s ‘How Dare You’ Speech
Back in September, climate-activist Greta Thunberg delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York. Most 15-year-olds aren’t adressing word leaders, but Greta isn’t most 15-year-olds, telling them: “you have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words”.
When J-Lo won fashion
J-Lo owning the Milan catwalk in the 2019 update of *that* green Versace dress, and looking even more incredible than she did when she wore it first time around 19 years ago. That woman is ageing in reverse and we are in total awe.
Katie Holmes’ comeback
In the year’s most unexpected fashion moment,Katie Holmes appeared in New York in a matching dove-grey cashmere bra and off-the-shoulder cardigan by Khaite and sparked a collective obsession with knitwear lingerie.
Phoebe Waller Bridge in basically everything
Not content with having the most-talked-about show of 2019 in Fleabag series 2, winning three Emmys and being named writer of the next Bond film, Phoebe Waller Bridge’s took her live Fleabag stage show to the West End and sold out in an hour.
Kylie Minogue’s record-breaking Glastonbury
14 years after being forced to pull out of a Glastonbury set due to her breast cancer diagnosis, Kylie made a triumphant return in the legends slot on the Sunday of the festival – which became the most-viewed Glasto performance of all time.
Cori Gauff Knocking Venus Williams out of Wimbledon
The 15 year-old teen star knocked world-champion Venus Williams out of the tennis competition and then the two of them shook hands and thanking each other. Yaas to the sporting sisterhood!
Gigi Hadid standing up to the runway crasher on the Chanel catwalk in September PFW
There’s nothing like seeing one of your favourite celebrities take the power into their own hands and escort someone off runway. Bow down, bitches.
Gemma Collins fall on Dancing on Ice
The GC took an almighty tumble on this year’s Dancing on Ice which immediately went viral. Like the true queen she is, she got straight back and owned the moment – clad in feathers and sequins, natch.
Craig David entering the Love Island villa
Craig David reduced Love Islander Anton to tears when he hosted a very awkward party in the villa. Weird but wonderful.
Justin Trudeau at the G20
Justin Trudeau being the Regina George of the G20 when he was caught adding Donald Trump to the burn book.
FIFA Women’s World Cup
The US women’s football team smashing the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer was a major milestone moment in women’s sport. Who run the world?
Princess Anne shunning Donald Trump of a handshake
Cue a million memes that broke the internet.
Prince Andrew can’t sweat revelation
Prince Andrew failed to recall sleeping with a woman but didn’t hesitate to remember the exact date and location of a trip to Pizza Express eighteen years ago. It must have been a good margherita.
