Forget the three-stone engagement ring, the ‘toi et moi’ style is set to be 2020’s most popular choice

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November 2017, there was an immediate swell in interest for three-stone engagement rings thanks to the now-Duchess of Sussex’s super sentimental piece.

Since then there’s been little to topple the trend, until now.

She may have first shown off her own ring over a year ago, but Emily Ratajkowski‘s two-stone engagement piece has slowly made its way to the top of every fashion girl’s wishlist.

Known as the ‘toi et moi’ style, meaning ‘you and me’ in French, it may look like a vibey, modern take on the more traditional 3-stone, but it is in fact a very traditional engagement ring look, harking back as far as the early 1700s.

Representing the love between two people, it’s a particularly brilliant way of incorporating a diamond that you’re a little tired of, or a family heirloom stone, in a totally fresh and alternative setting.

Arielle Charnas, of Something Navy fame, re-set her original emerald cut engagement ring into a toi et moi, introducing a heart-shaped diamond to sit alongside it. The mother of two daughters plans to eventually give a stone to each, providing the perfect solution to an often-awkward scenario.

This mis-matched aesthetic is perfect for those of us too indecisive to commit to a single stone, with it even opening up the opportunity to plan with different stones as well as shapes.

Whichever stone – or shape – you opt for, it’s a good idea to work with a jeweller to coordinate the overall look as their professional eye may foresee a hurdle that you might not have anticipated yourself.

We’re predicting an influx of these architectural masterpieces to hit our Instagram feed early next year, and we frankly can’t wait.

Another excuse to nudge for that proposal…
