MindFree Turns Genre Chaos Into Wizard Rock

The Los Angeles trio treats melody as gravity, holding together a sound built to shock and comfort in the same breath.

Genre labels rarely survive contact with a working band. A band may start with one sound in mind, but the music often changes as the members grow and experiment. For Los Angeles-based MindFree, that tension is the point. The band writes music that moves between indie rock, psych-prog, funk, psychedelia, shoegaze, metal, punk, and pop, sometimes within the same track. Instead of trying to mix all of those influences into one sound, MindFree lets each song keep its own personality. The result is a sound the band calls Wizard-Rock, built on melody but never locked to one style.

Independent bands run into different versions of this problem constantly. Streaming platforms and playlists reward artists who can be summed up in a single tag. A clean genre makes a band easier to place in an algorithm, on a festival lineup, or next to similar acts. Bands with a wide range of influences are often told to pick a lane, even when that mix is the most interesting thing about them.

MindFree was formed in 2018 by guitarist and lead vocalist Mark Anthony Abbruzzese, who plays alongside drummer Ric Rosario and Curtis Ortega on bass, keyboards, and backing vocals. The trio do not approach every track with the same formula. Rather than conforming and narrowing its sound to fit into an easy category, MindFree lets each song’s mood determine which influences come forward. That flexibility turns the pressure to “pick a lane” into the foundation of the band’s identity.

The band’s two albums, MindFree, released in 2021, and StarDust, released in 2024, show how far that range can stretch. StarDust leans into psychedelic and funk textures, while “Navigation” pulls more toward metal and pop.

Layered vocals, adaptable guitar tones, analog pedals and amplifiers, heavy bass, atmospheric keyboards, and driving drums give each song room to land wherever its mood takes it. Abbruzzese’s guitar sound is also shaped by Black Volt Amplification tube amplifiers and custom guitars, along with work from Pharaoh Howell at Truetone Music.

The band’s catalog also includes two cover songs, a tradition inspired by artists such as Stevie Wonder and Thin Lizzy. These two artists would not normally be placed side by side, but they make sense within MindFree’s musical world.

MindFree does not see its range as a problem. The changes are not there to prove the band can play several styles. They help express the difficulty, humor, frustration, and the beauty of being human. A song can feel comforting in one section and unsettling in the next without either feeling out of place.

This approach has pushed the band into real momentum. MindFree performs regularly and has built an audience through live shows and platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. In 2025, the band made it to the final 20 in America’s Next Top Hitmaker Contest, which featured Alice Cooper on the judging panel. Since 2023, MindFree has also ranked as Broadjam’s top band or artist in the Indie Rock category on a month-to-month basis.

MindFree also wants to recognize the people who have supported the band along the way, especially their families, friends, and fans. The band gives special thanks to engineer Cirilo Rios, Noah Dearborn and Jacob Williams of Wonderhaus Studios, videographer Dan Ramos, photographers Averie Rivera and Mathias Fau, and the industry professionals helping expand its reach.

MindFree released a two-song EP in 2025 and is now working on its third album. The band is also looking toward wider distribution, label opportunities, festival appearances, larger venues, and opening slots for established touring acts.

For a group that refuses to pick a single lane, the goal has never been to fit the format. It is to make music for people who want to feel more than one thing at once.
