It’s officially swimwear season!
As everyone jets off for their long-awaited sunny holidays, and posts enviable vacation snaps on Insta, we’re not only getting inspiration for where to book next but also what swimwear styles to cop.
While swimwear is one of the most personal things you could buy, some trends inevitably emerge every year. Remember “vintage girl summer” last year that had everyone from Beyoncé to JLo hopping on the trend, wearing headscarves and cat-eye sunnies? This year, however, further adding on to everyone’s obsession with all things retro, the style set has thrown it all the way back to the 1940s and 50’s and adopted the pin-up swimsuit.
All-American girl Gigi Hadid is quite literally the poster child of this trend. The model dressed up in a sailor-striped bustier for her campaign with Havaianas flip flops (complete with retro blonde curls), looking like she’d just walked out of a vintage film.
It’s easy to see how this trend has come to dominate swimwear this summer. We’ve seen the rise of corset tops both on the runway and on celebrity red carpets (hi Kylie Jenner) and polka dots have become a popular print partially thanks to Gen Z’s continued fascination with vintage finds. The pin-up swimsuit was bound to come back, really.
But what we love about the pin-up swimsuit trend is how universally flattering the shapes are—and not to mention supportive for those requiring larger cup sizes. Because let’s be honest, as much as we love a micro bikini, they’re not exactly the most practical for jumping in the waves.

The pin-up swimsuit often features a one-piece style that offers more coverage around the boobs and bum—sometimes even with a halter strap—so you can frolic in the water to your heart’s content. Oh and they make for easy styling from day to night. Just throw a sarong around your hips and you’re good to go for a lush lunch in Mykonos.
When it comes to swimwear, comfort is of course the most important factor to consider, so make sure that no matter what’s trending, the fit suits your body type, be that high-waisted briefs or strapless tube silhouettes. Thankfully, all our favourite brands have a slightly different take on the pin-up trend. From Magda Butrym’s one-piece with 3D flowers on the cups to ASOS’ polka dot bodysuit, these are our favourite swimsuit buys this summer.
