SZA made her film acting debut opposite Keke Palmer in One of Them Days and is looking ahead at a dream role she would like to play.
While guest-starring on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the rapper revealed that she would like to take on the role of Storm, the powerful comic book character mutant and a member of the X-Men.
“I would love to be a superhero,” SZA said after Hudson said she could see her playing one in a film.
SZA said that Silver Surfer is one of her favorite characters, “but Silver Surfer is a dude,” adding, “I was talking to someone the other day… Well, my dad collects first-edition comics, so he has the first-edition Thor comics and Silver Surfer just in the basement.”
The performer said she “grew up being into Marvel and DC” and noted Storm’s origin story and how “she comes from this whole other place where it’s the jungle … So, I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm origin story.”
“I love to bring the range,” she added.
Storm is a Marvel Comics character created by Len Wen and Dave Cockrum, who first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men in 1975. Born to a tribal princess of Kenya, Storm is a mutant who can control the weather and atmosphere.
Halle Berry first portrayed the role in the live-action 2000 film X-Men. Alexandra Shipp portrayed a younger version of the character for 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, a role she would reprise in 2018’s Deadpool 2 and 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
