In one of the most unforgettable moments of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary concert, Nirvana’s surviving members—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—reunited to perform “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” with devoted Nirvana superfan Post Malone on lead vocals.
The surprise performance at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Friday night (February 14th) was introduced by SNL alum Adam Sandler, who exclaimed, “Ladies and gentlemen, Post Nirvana!”
Malone has been known to deliver impressive covers of Nirvana songs, and he certainly did not disappoint at the SNL 50 concert, offering up a thrilling version of the game-changing “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and garnering a huge hug from Grohl at the end of the performance.
The SNL gig marked the second surprise Nirvana reunion within a few weeks, and Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear were joined by Joan Jett, St, Vincent, Kim Gordon, and Violet Grohl at the recent FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles.
Before that, the band reunited in April 2014 for their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, as well as a secret after-party at the tiny St. Vitus club in Brooklyn that same night.
The SNL performance also marked Nirvana’s first televised or streaming performance with a male singer since the passing of Kurt Cobain. The band did play with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis and Deertick’s John J. McCauley at the aforementioned Rock Hall after-party.
