Amazon MGM Studios‘ giant robot movie Voltron is getting bigger with the addition of Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo and Tharanya Tharan to the cast.
They join previously announced Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Henry Cavill, Rita Ora and John Kim.
Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing off a screenplay he wrote with Ellen Shanman. The story, though under wraps, will feature a new generation of pilots, according to Thurber. The live-action take of the anime TV series is being produced by Todd Lieberman via Hidden Pictures, Bob Koplar, Thurber and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman.
Baptista recently wrapped shooting David Lowery’s Mother Mary opposite Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel for A24. She can most recently be seen in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, opposite Lesley Manville and Isabelle Huppert for Focus Features. Next up, Baptista, who was awarded the prestigious European Shooting Star Award at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, will be seen starring opposite Samara Weaving in the feature film Borderline, for director Jimmy Warden with Margot Robbie producing. In TV, she stars as the lead of Netflix series Warrior Nun. She is repped by UTA and Anonymous.
Kayo is currently filming the Apple film F1, starring opposite Brad Pitt and Damson Idris; that pic is getting a theatrical release via Warner Bros next summer. Kayo previously starred in Taika Waititi’s Max series Our Flag Means Death. He can also be heard as the voice of Baby Bear in the Universal feature Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and starred in Judd Apatow’s film The Bubble for Netflix. He can also be seen in Bloods, which he created and stars in as the male lead. Additional TV credits include Famalam, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA and a Royal Television Society award; Horrible Histories; Drunk History; Murder in Successville; Static; Youngers; The Javone Prince Show; We The Jury; The Aliens; Hailmakers; and Misfits. Tharan recently starred in the series Year Of, the spinoff of the award-winning series Bump. Other credits include the Apple TV+ thriller drama series Shantaram alongside Charlie Hunnam, the Paramount+ series More Than This, the ABC Australia comedy series Why Are You Like This and the ABC Australia/Universal Kids series Mustangs FC.
