‘Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley Movie Looking for New Scribe As Steven Knight Exits

Good things come to those who wait, and when it comes to the future story of Daisy Ridley‘s Rey following Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, it’s going to be awhile as the latest scribe, Steven Knight, has exited, Deadline has confirmed. The search for a new screenwriter is underway, according to sources.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Disney+ series Ms. Marvel) is still attached to direct.

When Deadline spoke with Ridley at SXSW she was still waiting on a script. The actress said she knew “bits and bobs” about the new story; that it’s likely Rey, the granddaughter of the Emperor, doesn’t have any children in the next series, which focuses on her starting a Jedi Academy.

In regards to delays for the project, nothing is expected to impact the two Star Wars release dates on hold. Currently, there are untitled pics set for December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027.

Peaky Blinders creator Knight replaced previous scribes Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson on the Star Wars project. This is par for the course for Lucasfilm when they’re trying to perfect Star Wars for the big screen. Knight recently wrote the critically acclaimed Angelina Jolie movie Maria, which is playing AFI Fest on Saturday night, and he’s working on a feature-film take of Peaky Blinders.

The next Star Wars movie is Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, based on the hit Disney+ series. Favreau and Dave Filoni co-wrote the screenplay, and Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal star. Brief footage was shown at this summer’s D23 that included an appearance by Babu Frick, shots of AT-ATs on a snowy planet ala Empire Strikes Back, and red alien, pointy-eared Zeb from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels.
