Netflix Developing ‘Pride & Prejudice’ Series Written By Dolly Alderton

Elizabeth Bennet and Mark Darcy could be coming to Netflix.

Deadline understands that a TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is in the works. We are told that Everything I Know About Love creator Dolly Alderton has written the scripts and casting is still yet to be ironed out. The project is in development and may not make it to screen.

If it does get greenlit, Pride and Prejudice will be Netflix’s first Austen adaptation since 2022’s Persuasion, which starred Dakota Johnson.

Many iconic Pride and Prejudice adaptations have been made down the years, including a movie with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in 2005 and the BBC’s version 10 years prior starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The Knightley movie was recently added to Netflix’s library.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel about love and class. Penned by Austen in the early 19th century, it tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mark Darcy, who eventually fall in love but have to navigate various obstacles as Elizabeth’s father seeks a male heir.

The novel frequently appears on best-of lists and has spawned numerous iconic scenes including Firth’s much-loved lake scene in the BBC adaptation.

These novel adaptations are in vogue at the moment. Earlier this week, the BBC revealed it is making a drama series out of Janice Hadlow’s The Other Bennet Sister, which tells the story of Mary Bennet. Meanwhile, Emerald Fennell is making a big-budget retelling of Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Netflix declined comment. The Daily Mail was first to report on Pride and Prejudice.
