Perry Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, updated fans on the singer’s mental and physical condition on Saturday (September 21st), following an onstage meltdown that led Jane’s Addiction to cancel their North American tour.
As previously reported, Farrell shoved and punched guitarist Dave Navarro during the band’s show in Boston on September 13th. The onstage fracas ended the show abruptly, and eventually led to Jane’s Addiction canceling the remainder of the tour.
Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins issued a statement citing Farrell’s “mental health difficulties,” while Farrell posted an apology to Navarro and the band’s fans.
Etty previously gave a detailed breakdown of the events surrounding the altercation and even called out Avery for landing some cheap shots on Farrell in the immediate aftermath. In her new Instagram post, she offers a positive perspective, letting fans know that Perry “will persevere” and that he is seeking medical attention for the vocal issues that plagued him on the tour:
“Beyond grateful and so very humbled we are, to all the dears that have taken the time to send us such beautiful words of love and support — checking in over and over again to make sure we are well taken care of. Offering love and compassion, words of kindness, and even your homes for us to escape to…
Like attracts like. Kindness attracts kindness. As you know, Perry is the gentlest of souls. We are equally astonished at Perry’s physical outburst as you are — but you must know that Perry must had been pushed to his absolute limit.. to that end we apologize.
We are taking a bit of time to ourselves, to reflect and to heal. Perry already has appointments with a otolaryngologist and a neurologist. If you know and love Perry well, you know there’s no need for me to address the other false narratives. Our souls know.
With all of your love, kindness, compassion and support, you know, Perry will persevere… He will recover. He will be happy again. He will once again be able to share his music, vision and artistry — unbridled.
Make no mistake when he’s ready he will take another giant leap over obstacles to make us laugh, think, while changing the world together.
We can rejoice together then. And you will know, we would not have been able to do it without you.”
An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the ear, nose, and throat. When performing in New York City a few nights before the doomed Boston show, Farrell apologized to fans for his vocal issues.
While Etty paints a hopeful picture for Perry’s future, things don’t look as bright for the fate of Jane’s Addiction. Five days after the onstage skirmish, the band released the new song “True Love,” but Navarro later took to Instagram to lament that fans would likely never hear the song live and to say, “I am gutted that things ended this way.” It should be noted that Navarro has since taken the Instagram post down, perhaps offering hope that Jane’s Addiction do have a future.
