Malia Obama just made a rare red carpet appearance in Vivienne Westwood

From former first daughter to young filmmaker and fashion icon, Malia Obama is making a name for herself.

The oldest daughter of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama made a rare red carpet appearance on Friday, September 6 in France to attend the 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival. Malia was there to premiere her short film, The Heart, which she wrote and directed.

While Obama was there first and foremost as a filmmaker, her red carpet outfit stole the show. Malia showed up wearing pieces from Vivienne Westwood’s autumn 2024 ready-to-wear collection — which debuted in London in March.

The red tartan corset top was shaped in true Vivienne Westwood fashion and was in line with some of the late designer’s previous textured looks. Obama paired the top with a matching dual-toned skirt that was short in the front and hung down in the back.

“Vivienne Westwood, queen,” Obama told Paris Match about her outfit. “I don’t know as much about fashion but I’m happy to be wearing it.”

The 26-year-old paired the look with tall brown boots. She kept her glam simple, with natural, dewy makeup, and let her long, auburn hair hang down past her shoulders.

“I’ve never done anything like this,” Obama said, looking around at the red carpet. “So I’m a little bit terrified but mostly excited.”

While she may have been nervous to attend such a publicised event, Malia Obama didn’t leave the film festival empty-handed. The filmmaker won the very first Young Spirit Award at the festival for her short film — which she was presented under the name Malia Ann. The award was created this year as a way to honour emerging talent in the film industry. Malia’s 18-minute film first debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and follows a grieving man as he receives an odd request from his late mother in her will.
