“There Will Never Be Another Like Him”: Hollywood Pays Tribute to Matthew Perry

Tributes to Matthew Perry, who was pronounced dead on Saturday at age 54 after being found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home, began pouring in over the weekend.

Artists including the 1975 and Charlie Puth played the Friends theme song at recent concerts. Max has placed a tribute card before the first episode of each season of the show streaming on its platform. And mourners have convened outside of the West Village apartment building used for exterior shots of the sitcom’s apartment building, bearing flowers and cards.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives,” Friends cocreators Marta Kauffman and David Crane said in a joint statement with series executive producer Kevin Bright.

The trio went on to call Perry “a brilliant talent,” adding, “It’s a cliché to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment—not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.” After sending love to Perry’s family and friends, they referenced the series’ episode title structure, writing, “This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

Ahead, read tributes penned by the rest of Perry’s Hollywood community, from Viola Davis to Gwyneth Paltrow.
