The long-awaited “Red, White & Royal Blue” movie adaptation from Amazon Prime Video is officially coming this summer. On April 26, the streamer announced that the film will arrive in August, later sharing several first-look photos on June 12. Then, during the first week of July, Prime Video shared three short preview clips from the romantic film featuring memorable scenes from the book, leading into the release of the full trailer on July 6.
The upcoming rom-com, based on the novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston, was filmed in London last summer. In the film, Nicholas Galitzine plays Prince Henry, a gay British prince who’s often looked over by his family. Prince Henry meets his match in Alex, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez. Alex is the first son of the United States, and when he causes an incident with the cake at Henry’s brother’s wedding, the two have to fake an international friendship, but things go awry when they start falling for each other.
Perez previously appeared as Marco in the Kissing Booth trilogy and in HBO Max’s “Minx.” Meanwhile, Galitzine starred as Prince Robert in 2021’s “Cinderella” and played Luke Morrow in 2022’s “Purple Hearts.” He’s also set to appear in “Bottoms” this August. “Red, White & Royal Blue” is directed by playwright Matthew López, making his feature directing debut, from a screenplay by López and Ted Malawer. The film is produced by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.
McQuiston told Deadline in June 2022 when casting was announced, “It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon, and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life. This casting is no exception. I absolutely can’t wait to see Taylor and Nicholas on screen as Alex and Henry.”
The novel “Red, White & Royal Blue” was released in 2019 and became a runaway bestseller. It’s also a perennial favorite on BookTok. McQuiston followed up “Red, White & Royal Blue” with two more queer novels: 2021’s “One Last Stop” and 2022’s “I Kissed Shara Wheeler,” their first young adult novel. Both books have also been New York Times bestsellers.
