Latto Runs on Stage Wearing 1 Heel to Accept BET Award: “I Could Cry”

Latto demonstrated pure excitement at the 2023 BET Awards on June 25. In response to her win for best female hip-hop artist, the acclaimed rapper immediately tore off one of her strappy heels and jumped for joy. Without pausing to remove the second heel, she dashed on stage — wearing a floor-length naked dress with a thigh-high slit — to accept her award. “Child, I’ve got one heel on, one heel off,” she said in between squeals of excitement during her acceptance speech.

“OK, I’m not gonna cry this year.”

“OK, I’m not gonna cry this year,” the BET Award winner added. “Shout-out to God. He be doing his big one on me. Shout-out to all the other women in the category, all the women who paved the way for this to even be possible. This category is going crazy this year.” Other nominees in this year’s best female hip-hop artist category included Cardi B, Coi Leray, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj.

Latto — who brought her sister, Brooklyn Nikole, as her date — also took a moment to acknowledge the talented women rappers who she believed should have been nominated this year. “Doechii, I love you, baby; Maiya The Don; Flo Milli — oh my god, I can’t even think — Mello Buckzz; TiaCorine. Shout-out to all the women. We killin’ it. This is the year of the female, year of women. Hopefully, we gon’ see an all-female tour. You feel me? Very soon. Keep killin’ it. Mama, I love you. And thank you to my man.”

Before running off stage with her award, she also thanked the BET Awards for presenting her with the new title. “Y’all always give me my flowers. I could cry. Thank you, BET,” she said. In 2022, Latto received the BET Award for best new artist.
