Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are set to join the likes of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and Julia Roberts and Richard Gere as the next rom-com icons. On March 9, Entertainment Tonight published photographs of the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Euphoria” stars filming a flirty scene for a then-untitled movie in Australia, which set the internet ablaze.
The buzz surrounding the film has only grown in the weeks since, with Powell and Sweeney’s real-life chemistry sparking debunked dating rumors between the costars. Meanwhile, more details about the project have trickled out, with its leads revealing at CinemaCon 2023 that the movie is called “Anyone But You.”
Sweeney serves as an executive producer for the project, while Will Gluck (“Easy A,” “Friends With Benefits”) directs the R-rated flick. The film will see Powell return to his romantic-comedy roots. After all, before he starred in the Oscar-nominated “Top Gun: Maverick,” Powell got his big break in the Netflix rom-com “Set It Up,” starring alongside Zoey Deutch.
Ahead, learn everything there is to know so far about Powell and Sweeney’s highly anticipated movie, from the cast and plot to behind-the-scenes photos from filming.
“Anyone But You” Plot
At CinemaCon, Powell and Sweeney shared more details about the movie’s plot (which is still mostly kept under wraps). “As you could probably guess, this movie’s about two people that hate each other,” Powell said on April 25, according to ET. “Sydney plays a character [who is] a real nightmare.” Sweeney added that Powell’s character is “a real assh*le . . . His character is a real d*ckhead.”
Teasing the movie’s overall premise, Powell asked, “What better place to put a nightmare and an assh*le than on the other side of the world in the most romantic setting imaginable?”
Previously, while discussing the new film in a March 22 interview with ET, Sweeney stayed tight-lipped about the plot but did tease a little bit of what fans can expect. “Just know the movie is going to be so much fun. It is so funny,” she said, adding, “It gives love, it gives humor, it gives sex. It gives all the great things that make a movie. And we want to bring back the good ol’ rom-coms with Will Gluck, and we’re having a great time doing it.”
“Anyone But You” Cast
On Jan. 11, Deadline reported that Sweeney and Powell signed on to star in the rated-R rom-com. Later, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, Alexandra Shipp, Michelle Hurd, Bryan Brown, Darren Barnet, and Hadley Robinson also boarded the film.
“Anyone But You” Behind-the-Scenes Photos
On April 10, Sweeney shared an Instagram gallery of photos — some featuring Powell — from her time filming in Australia, captioning the post, “🚎 sometimes things are more fun in the rain :)”
