Exclusive: Megan Thee Stallion Recalls Late Mom Putting Her on to Lil’ Kim on “RapCaviar Presents”

A new kind of music docuseries is heading to Hulu later this month to shine a light on today’s biggest hot-button topics as recalled by hip-hop’s brightest young stars — and we have a first look at it. “RapCaviar Presents,” a six-part series inspired by the notable Spotify playlist of the same name, aims to untangle the most complex parts of hip-hop culture as we know it — from the criminalization of rap and social media criticism to misogyny, women’s sexuality, and America’s mental health crisis.

Ahead of its March premiere, POPSUGAR has an exclusive look at one of the “RapCaviar Presents” episodes, and in the short clip, City Girls and Megan Thee Stallion recall their introductions to some of the women in hip-hop who laid the foundation for their successful careers — starting with the latter’s late mom.

“My mom was a rapper. She was a female rapper, but I had never heard women being rappers, ever, because my mom was listening to UGK, Three 6 Mafia, my daddy, Lil Wayne. Like, we only listening to men in the house. But one day, my mom put on Lil’ Kim. ‘Damn, like she raps harder than a lot of these guys,'” Megan recalls. Meanwhile, City Girls run down the list of women rappers they grew up listening to — from Foxy Brown and Missy Elliott to Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Eve.

The clip then goes on to tease the topics “RapCaviar Presents” will dive into, including the legacy of women in rap and the reemergence of the “pussy rap” era that’s been revived by artists like Nicki Minaj and newer acts.

According to the show’s logline, each episode of “RapCaviar Presents” examines a “deep-rooted issue affecting hip-hop artists, their fans, and society at large.” Through vivid storytelling, commentary from cultural tastemakers and media experts, as well as years of historical context, the series strives to tell the “tales of triumph, disruption, empowerment, and redemption” in hip-hop through a new generation of artists.
