Volker Bertelmann Wins Best Original Score for All Quiet on the Western Front at 2023 Oscars

He won over works by Justin Hurwitz, Carter Burwell, Son Lux, and John Williams

Volker Bertelmann has won Best Original Score for All Quiet on the Western Front at the 95th Academy Awards. It’s his first-ever Oscar win. Bertelmann beat out Justin Hurwitz for Babylon, Carter Burwell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Son Lux for Everything Everywhere All at Once, and John Williams for The Fabelmans.

All Quiet on the Western Front was nominated in nine categories in total. In addition to Best Original Score, the film was also up for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best International Feature Film, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

This year, the Academy Awards are broadcasting all 24 categories on air. This decision follows last year’s controversy when they moved eight categories out of the 2022 Oscars live broadcast. Many industry members said the move minimized the creative accomplishments of certain departments that are responsible for a movie’s success, including Original Score, Editing, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
