Kate Winslet Rewears a 7-Year-Old Dress to the Premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water

Kate Winslet is capitalizing her on extensive collection of red carpet looks assembled over the course of her almost three-decade career by rewearing a few of her favorites.

The actor walked the blue carpet at the the world premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water in London on Tuesday in a charcoal grey gown by Badgley Mischka that she previously wore seven years prior. The dress features a halter neckline with glittering silver floral embellishment spilling down the sides and a column skirt finished off with a slight train. Winslet previously wore this same gown to the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015 to attend the premiere of her movie The Dressmaker. Both times, she styled the look with a sweptback updo, natural makeup, and diamond drop earrings. This particular Badgley Mischka look is also still currently available on Rent The Runway for just $179 with the original retail price listed as $1,190.

And expect to see Winslet doing a whole lot more shopping from her own closet in the near future. Back in September 2020, she told Vanity Fair that the best thing about the pandemic bringing Hollywood to screech to a halt was that she no longer had to put herself through the nightmarish process of try-ons and fittings for various red carpets. “The dresses, the stress, the dress fittings…It’s so stressful, and I know that sounds like, ‘Oh, here goes Kate Winslet talking about how stressful it is to do dress fittings for award shows.’” she said. “But it is stressful. I don’t like having to squeeze my hot-and-bothered mum-on-the-school-run body randomly into a red carpet dress that I’m never going to wear again. The money that’s wasted on it. The hours and stress that people pour into these things. The incredible artists who make these dresses are wonderful, but to make something that’s only going to be worn once…I’ve already decided I’m doing repeat dresses. Everything will have to be let out, but whatever.”

Winslet added, “I love not getting into those fucking dresses and those fucking shoes. All the money. It’s always really pained me, the money that gets wasted on colossal, great big junkets: flying journalists, actors, glam squads all over the world. Why the hell is any of that important? If I cared what I looked like, I would have put makeup on right now.”
