As winter sets in, allow us to introduce you your cold weather wardrobe hero: half zip sweaters.
While sequin dresses and Christmas jumpers might be crowding your shopping wishlists rn, giving space to a versatile item you’re likely to wear all season long is a chicer – and more sustainable – way to shop. While half zip sweaters aren’t exactly new (the zip detailed sweater has long featured as a staple silhouette in athleisure wear) they’ve had a recent high-fashion upgrade so we’d like to award them the hallowed status of perma-trend. Those elevated basics that the street style set rely on to look chic, but aren’t so fad-led they’ll ever go out of style.
Half zip sweaters were seen a few seasons back on the catwalks at JW Anderson, Isabel Marant, and Alaïa and of course, the high street quickly followed suit. In line with their classic reputation, our favourite half zip sweaters come in every shade or grey, griege and beige as well as striped versions and we’ve hunted down plenty of options, whatever your colour preference and budget.
Look to Instagram and Pinterest for tips on how to style the half zip sweater. While the mercury is still in single digits, we’d recommend layering a roll neck underneath and wearing leather (or faux leather) leggings or trousers for an interesting clash of textures. Fleece-lined leggings are also a brilliant companion for these knits and if you style them with chunky white socks and trainers it’s an #OOTD-worthy look. Throw on a coat and you’re ready to ace your weekend to do list.

So which are the half zip sweaters we’re adding to our carts? Sustainable brand Albaray’s Oatmeal Half Zip Neck Jumper comes in a versatile shade and is currently on sale while Polo Ralph Lauren’s version is made from a super-snuggly fleece fabric. ASOS have a kitschy mountain view printed half knit sweater (add it to your apres-ski arsenal) although minimalists would likely fall for COS’s oversized cashmere blend knit in an elegant grey shade.
Although we are here for subtle neutral shades sometimes a pop of colour will do wonders for your wardrobe – and mood. Bernadette’s pink intarsia cable-knit sweater or Ganni’s sky blue organic cotton blend jumper offer the shot of dopamine dressing we need this winter – and beyond.
