The Influences of Emily Daccarett

The Influences of Emily Daccarett

For designer Emily Daccarett fashion and music cannot be separated. Daccarett creates an immersive world of storytelling through music, film, and fashion. Each artistic direction begins with a beat that forms a story. From the start of her brand, she has fused those worlds together, creating a symbiotic flow between the two.

What were your musical influences that inspired your new music?

Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot, Kate Bush, and Vanessa Paradis  all were big influences on me with this new album. I love to experiment and find  the right sound that fully portrays the story I want to sing about!

Are there any specific terms you have with yourself to make sure to put out the  best version of your music possible?

I go with what I don’t hate! It’s strange to hear yourself and if it doesn’t feel  genuine to me, I know we still have a lot of work to do. There’s not a fool proof method of knowing when something will connect well with people, but I’ve found  listening to my gut feeling usually leads to something good.

How do you magnify what needs to be changed when creating new music?

It’s about finding the bits that do not sit well within the song, knowing when to  take away and where to add. Really, I’m just going by emotion and looking for the  song to feel right. I guess that’s the best way to describe it. I listen to the song  through different speakers, different settings, and at different times of the day,  you can discover a lot that way.

Who helps aid you when you are being too hard on yourself?

My mom, primarily because she knows how hard I can be on myself. She helps  me get out of my head and look at it from a different angle.

Is there anything in terms of your music that may seem too overwhelming? How  have you navigated in being able to share the load of your work with others in the  process?

I’m still working on learning to navigate the workload and share with others. I get  overwhelmed when I get writer’s block. Because the other stuff is too  unpredictable, so on all other hang-up’s I have to find a way to overcome them,  but writer’s block feels so debilitating and frustrating!

Any burst of creativity that you’re experiencing right now?

Yes! I’ve been having a surge of inspiration and working on that at the moment,  trying to figure out what that means for me, and how I will use it! I’m also a  fashion designer, so what I do with my music influences what I’m doing in  fashion, or vice versa.

How do you keep the fun in your work?

I do really love what I do and for that reason when I’m getting too tense, I take a  break from it. It doesn’t have to be long, could be just for the day, and it’s like a  reset. I feel so grateful that this is my life and that I’m able to express myself in  different ways through music and through fashion.
