A24 has released the first official trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller God’s Creatures starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson. The film, which debuted in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, is directed by Saela Davis & Anna Rose Holmer (The Fits).
Set in a quiet, brooding Irish fishing village, God’s Creatures follows the increasingly strained relationship between prodigal son Brian O’Hara (Mescal) and his mother, Aileen (Watson), when Brian suddenly returns home to his family after living abroad in Australia for seven years. After Brian is accused of an unspeakable act against a former flame (Aisling Franciosi), Aileen is caught between protecting her dear son and her own sense of right and wrong, driving her to near-madness.
The film is from a screenplay by Shane Crowle; the story is by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and Crowley. Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly is producing following her critically acclaimed films Ammonite and Lady Macbeth.
Additional credits include Inbal Weinberg as production designer, Julia Bloch as editor and director of photography is Chayse Irvin. The film is co-financed by A24, BBC Film, Screen Ireland and the Western Region Audiovisual Producers Fund/WRAP. A24 controls worldwide rights.
Davis and Holmer are best known for their feature The Fits, which premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival and screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. In 2017, the film was nominated for multiple awards including Best First Feature at the Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards and won the Critics Award at the Deauville Film Festival. They are repped by Management 360.
